Quick Help

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Getting Started

Q: Do I need to create an account to use CHKD?

No! CHKD works completely standalone on your device. No account, no email, no password required. Just download and start tracking habits immediately.

Q: How many habits can I track?

You can track up to 24 habits total. They're displayed in a grid with 6 habits per page, and you can swipe between pages.

Q: How do I add my first habit?

Tap the "+" button on the home screen, give your habit a name, choose an icon and color, set your schedule, and you're done! Your new habit appears as a colorful circle on the main screen.

Using the App

Q: How do I mark a habit as complete?

Long-press and hold on the habit's circle. You'll see a ring animation fill around it—keep holding until it completes (about 0.6 seconds). This prevents accidental taps. If you have "Reduce Motion" enabled in iOS accessibility settings, a single tap will work instead.

Q: Can I undo a completion if I marked it by mistake?

Yes! Long-press the completed habit again and you'll see a confirmation prompt to undo the completion.

Q: I forgot to log a habit yesterday. Can I add it retroactively?

Absolutely! Tap the calendar icon or swipe to access previous days, then complete the habit for that past date. You can retroactively complete habits up to 7 days back. We believe you shouldn't lose a streak just because you forgot to tap a button.

Q: What does "custom day boundary" mean?

Most habit apps reset at midnight, which is frustrating if you're a night owl. CHKD lets you set when your "day" ends—for example, if you set it to 3 AM, completing a habit at 1 AM still counts for "today," not yesterday. Perfect for people who stay up late or work night shifts!

Q: How do I change the day boundary time?

Go to Settings → Custom Day Boundary. Choose any time that makes sense for your schedule. If you're usually asleep before midnight, stick with the default. If you often stay up past midnight, try 3 AM or 4 AM.

Scheduling & Streaks

Q: What's the difference between the three task types?

  • Positive (Do): Things you want to do regularly (exercise, read, meditate). Mark complete each time you do it.
  • Negative (Avoid): Things you're trying to stop (smoking, junk food, nail-biting). The streak continues automatically unless you explicitly mark a "slip."
  • Timed: Built-in countdown timer for duration-based habits (meditate for 10 minutes). The task auto-completes when the timer finishes.

Q: Do I have to do a habit every single day?

No! You can set flexible schedules:

  • Daily: Every day (the default)
  • Specific days: Only certain days of the week (e.g., "Gym on Monday, Wednesday, Friday")
  • X per week: A weekly target (e.g., "Run 3 times per week"—you choose which days)
  • Weekly: Once per week

Days that aren't scheduled never break your streak. For example, if you only track "Gym" on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays don't affect your streak at all.

Q: How are streaks calculated?

A streak is the number of consecutive scheduled periods you've completed a habit. If you complete a habit every scheduled day, your streak grows. If you miss a scheduled day, it resets to zero. Non-scheduled days are invisible to the streak counter.

Q: What's the difference between "Current Streak" and "Longest Streak"?

  • Current Streak: Your active streak right now—how many days in a row you've completed the habit recently.
  • Longest Streak: Your personal record—the most consecutive completions you've ever achieved for this habit. This is stored forever so you can try to beat it!

Q: If I miss a day, do I lose my longest streak?

No! Your longest streak is your all-time record and stays forever. Only your current streak resets when you miss a scheduled day.

Reminders & Notifications

Q: How do I set up reminders?

When creating or editing a habit, tap "Reminders" and add one or more notification times. Each habit can have its own custom reminder schedule.

Q: The app isn't sending me notifications. What should I check?

  1. Make sure you granted notification permission when you first opened CHKD
  2. Go to iOS Settings → CHKD → Notifications and verify notifications are enabled
  3. Check that "Do Not Disturb" or "Focus" modes aren't blocking notifications
  4. If reminders still don't work, try deleting and re-adding them in the app

Data & Privacy

Q: Where is my data stored?

All your habit data is stored locally on your iPhone. We never send your data to our servers—we don't even have servers! Your habits, completions, and streaks stay on your device.

Q: What about iCloud sync?

If you enable iCloud sync (optional), your data syncs between your own Apple devices using your personal iCloud account. This is handled entirely by Apple—we still don't see your data. You can enable it in Settings → iCloud Sync.

Q: Can I export my data?

Yes! Go to Settings → Export Data. You can export everything as CSV (for spreadsheets) or JSON (for developers/advanced users). This gives you a backup and lets you analyze your data however you want.

Q: Do you collect any analytics or track how I use the app?

No. We don't use analytics, crash reporting, or any tracking tools. We have no idea how you use the app, which features you prefer, or even if it crashes. Your privacy is more important to us than having usage data. See our full Privacy Policy for details.

Statistics & Progress

Q: What's a "Perfect Day"?

A Perfect Day is when you complete every habit that was scheduled for that day. It's shown in your global statistics and is a great motivator!

Q: How do I see my detailed statistics?

Tap any habit to open its detail view. You'll see:

  • Current streak and longest streak
  • Total completions (lifetime)
  • Completion rate (percentage of scheduled days completed)
  • Calendar heatmap showing which days you completed it
  • Best day of the week for this habit
  • Average completion time

For global stats across all habits, tap the statistics icon on the home screen.

Account & Pricing

Q: Is this a subscription?

No! CHKD is a one-time purchase. Pay once, own it forever. No monthly fees, no recurring charges, no features locked behind a paywall.

Q: What if I get a new phone?

If you have iCloud sync enabled, your data automatically transfers to your new device. If not, export your data on the old phone first, then you can manually restore it on the new device (future feature) or start fresh.

Q: Can I use CHKD on iPad?

The current version is optimized for iPhone. iPad support with an adaptive layout is planned for a future update.

Troubleshooting

The app won't open or crashes on launch

  1. Force quit the app: Double-tap the home button (or swipe up from bottom on newer iPhones) and swipe CHKD away
  2. Restart your iPhone: Hold power button, slide to power off, wait 10 seconds, turn back on
  3. Check for iOS updates: Go to Settings → General → Software Update
  4. Reinstall the app: Delete CHKD, restart your phone, download again from App Store (make sure to export your data first if you don't have iCloud sync!)
  5. If it still crashes: Contact us at [email protected] with your iPhone model and iOS version
